Schizophrenia Adoption Studies

چکیده
Khush Mittal I read the paper by Chi et al. with interest. The authors found a greater hypoxia response gene expression in carcinomas than stromal cells grown in vitro, but were not sure of the underlying explanation (see Discussion in [1]). The underlying explanation may be the difference in mitotic activity and hence metabolic activity between these two cell types, such that hypoxia may be present within cancer cells, although the surrounding culture media may have similar oxygen levels as the stromal cultures. The differences in mitotic activity could also explain greater hypoxia-related gene expression in clear-cell carcinoma compared with chromophobe carcinoma, normal tissue, or oncocytoma, as clear-cell carcinomas are more active mitotically. Did the authors compare the hypoxia gene expression with mitotic activity in various tumors?

A critical review of recent adoption, twin, and family studies of schizophrenia: behavioral genetics perspectives.
Continuing uncertainty about the etiology of schizophrenia calls for periodic reappraisal of relevant data and conclusions, reappraisals guided by a beacon of modest doubt to avoid the distorted views of both the zealot and the skeptic. This review does not set out to cover every possible aspect of the genetics of schizophrenia. It deals with data from recent family, twin, and adoption studies ...
متن کاملClinical variables and genetic loading for schizophrenia: analysis of published Danish adoption study data.
Schizophrenia shows considerable clinical variation, but the relationship between clinical variables and degree of genetic loading for schizophrenia is unclear. We investigated this by analyzing published data from the adoption study of Kety et al. (1994) in Denmark. We sought to determine which clinical variables in proband adoptees with chronic schizophrenia predicted risk of schizophrenia in...
متن کاملEmotional response deficits in schizophrenia: insights from affective science.
Our understanding of the emotional features of schizophrenia has benefited greatly from the adoption of methods and theory from the field of affective science. This article covers basic concepts and methods from affective science on the psychological and neural mechanisms contributing to emotions and reviews the ways in which this research has advanced our understanding of emotional response de...
متن کاملA review of the evidence from family, twin and adoption studies for a genetic contribution to adult psychiatric disorders.
Family, twin and adoption studies have provided major evidence for the role of genetics in numerous psychiatric disorders including obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. As the search for patterns of inheritance and candidate genes of these complex disorders continues, we review relevant findings from q...
متن کاملPARADIGMS, TEXTBOOKS, AND PSYCHIATRIC RESEARCH Inaccuracy and Bias in Textbooks Reporting Psychiatric Research: The Case of the Schizophrenia Adoption Studies
Mental health textbooks sometimes provide inaccurate information, typically supporting common beliefs in the field. Psychiatry and psychology textbooks’ discussion of the schizophrenia adoption studies is examined. Particular attention is paid to the earlier studies, which helped pave the way for the current widespread acceptance of the importance of genetic factors influencing psychological tr...
متن کاملSchizophrenia: What’s DAO and DAOA Got To Do With It?
Schizophrenia is a common chronic mental disorder which affects ~1% of the world’spopulation [1]. It is a major cause of morbidity and patients need long term medical and social care. It is caused by both environmental and genetic factors. The contribution of inheritance to the disease is ~80% and family, twin, and adoption studies showed the importance of genes on the susceptibility to disease...
